The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called on leaders and residents of the South-East to openly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that such political alignment would strengthen future reciprocity for the region’s presidential ambition.
Umahi made the remarks on Thursday in Enugu during the inauguration of completed sections of the Enugu–Onitsha federal highway, where he emphasised the need for grassroots mobilisation in support of the current administration.
According to him, while political leaders in the region are already backing the president, there is a need to extend that support to the general populace through sustained engagement and awareness.
“All the governors of the zone are supporting the president, but that support must be taken to the grassroots. People need to understand the impact of his policies and projects in the region,” he said.
The minister also urged the South-East’s political leadership, particularly Governor Hope Uzodimma, to intensify efforts in mobilising public backing for the president.
Umahi maintained that President Tinubu has demonstrated commitment to the region, citing what he described as efforts to address long-standing concerns of marginalisation. He pointed to key appointments and infrastructural developments as evidence of inclusion.
“This is the first time the South-East is holding the position of Minister of Works alongside two service chief roles. These are significant steps that should not be overlooked,” he noted.
Addressing speculations about his political future, Umahi dismissed rumours suggesting he might resign to contest for a Senate seat, describing the reactions from the public as a sign of their appreciation for his current role.
He further urged the South-East electorate to adopt a strategic approach ahead of the 2027 general elections, suggesting that strong electoral support for the president could position the region favourably in future political calculations.
“The presidency is not secured through rhetoric alone but through strategic political engagement. When we support others today, they are more likely to support us when it is our turn,” he said.
Umahi added that the administration has undertaken several infrastructural and socio-economic initiatives in the South-East, which he believes should serve as a basis for continued political support.
