FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has said that he is fully aware of the grave political consequences awaiting him should President Bola Tinubu fail to secure re-election in 2027, admitting that he would be the “first target” of retribution if the opposition seizes power.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Tuesday, the former Rivers State governor did not mince words about the high-stakes gamble he has taken by openly backing a president from a rival political party.
“I will be the first politician that I think they will come after. I will be the first politician. I know they will come for my head,” Wike stated bluntly.
While he did not mention names directly, his comments were widely interpreted as a reference to the two leading opposition figures,former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, both of whom are widely expected to challenge Tinubu again in the next election cycle.
Despite the looming threat, Wike insisted that his resolve to campaign for the President remains unshaken.
“Each day I sleep, I am thinking about the president’s re-election. When I am eating, I think about the president’s re-election. Everything I am doing now is about the president’s re-election,” he said.
The FCT Minister, who has faced relentless criticism from PDP loyalists for crossing party lines to support an APC-led administration, acknowledged that the attacks on him have been unusually vicious. However, he maintained that such barbs do not faze him.
“I don’t see where anybody in this country today has been called names the way my name has been. I am not bothered about people who say their own thing. My business is, like I said, I am going to support Mr. President,” Wike added.
