The pioneer chairman of the PDP in Delta State, Senator James Manager, has cited internal disagreements, poor leadership at the national level, and the PDP’S dwindling prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections as rationale for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s decision to join the APC.
Manager who represented Delta South on the PDP platform for a record five terms from 2003 to 2023 said, “You have just been told about some of the things that have been happening in PDP Delta State.
Some consultations have been ongoing, and the climax of those consultations is what you are witnessing today. We have discussed, disagreed, and eventually agreed. It’s a unanimous decision.”
Drawing on his riverine background, Manager added, “You cannot remain in a boat that is clearly capsizing. Looking at the prevailing issues within the PDP, we came to the inevitable conclusion that we must chart a new course. It is a collective decision, and we believe it is the right one.”
Manager also cited a recent resolution by the PDP Governors’ Forum in Ibadan, where the party resolved against entering a coalition for future elections. “With only about 11 governors left in the PDP, how do you contest against an incumbent president and expect to win? That resolution demoralized many within the party,” he said.
He further decried the party’s instability, noting the frequent changes in leadership and lack of strategic planning. “Today, Senator Anyanwu is the National Secretary, tomorrow it’s someone else. The PDP is in real trouble.”
