The Labour Party (LP) has firmly rejected any plans to join a coalition with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Executive Council (NEC) made its stance clear in a resolution issued after a meeting held on 2 May 2025 at its national headquarters in Abuja.
In the resolution signed by Abure and National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the NEC “declared that the Party is not and will not be part of any coalition towards the 2027 General Election. The Party will rather continue to rebuild, reposition, re-strategize, reconcile, strengthen, drive its programs and policies, win more members towards winning the 2027 General Elections”
The NEC reaffirmed the legitimacy of its 2024 National Convention, held in Nnewi on 27 March 2024, stating that it complied with the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, the LP’s 2019 Constitution, and INEC guidelines.
It also upheld the validity of the ad-hoc delegates elected from congresses across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The council expressed full confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) elected at the convention, led by National Chairman Julius Abure, endorsing its ability to unify the party and secure victory in future polls. It also commended the Supreme Court for upholding the principle of political party supremacy in its 4 April 2025 ruling, which reinforced the binding nature of decisions made by a party’s constitutional organs.
While reiterating its commitment to internal reconciliation, the NEC extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, urging them to prioritise the party’s interests. However, it firmly dismissed any notion of forming alliances for the 2027 elections, declaring that the LP would instead focus on rebuilding, strengthening its structures, and expanding its membership base to contest independently.
The council congratulated Chief George Moghalu, the party’s candidate for the 8 November 2025 Anambra governorship election, and called on members and residents to support his campaign.
In a decisive move, the NEC addressed alleged anti-party activities by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and other members, setting up a disciplinary committee chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi. The committee, given two weeks to submit its report, includes Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim as secretary, alongside Barr. Kehinde Edun, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, and Barr. Callistus Ihejiagwa as members.
