Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that his new coalition will “resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027.”
Obi made the announcement on Tuesday at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, marking a significant realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi told attendees, which included ADC National Chairman David Mark. The move confirms months of speculation about his future with the Labour Party, which he led in the 2023 general elections.
The ADC is the adopted platform of a coalition of opposition and political pressure groups. Obi’s defection is seen as a major boost for the party’s quest to present a formidable challenge in the next national elections.
“We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027,” Obi reiterated, setting the tone for his campaign’s focus on electoral integrity.
