A spokesperson for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the party leadership to purge “opportunistic content creators” from its ranks, accusing them of hijacking political activism for personal gain.
NDC spokesperson Theo Agada made the demand on Saturday via X, reacting to a viral video by popular online personality Flag Boy NG, who was seen setting campaign materials linked to Peter Obi and the party ablaze.
The footage showed Flag Boy NG, donning a shirt associated with the Obidient Movement, displaying political flags and NDC-branded items, before removing the shirt and setting the materials on fire. The video concluded with a graphic bearing his name superimposed on Nigerian flags. The motive behind the action remains unclear, as the content creator has not publicly explained his actions.
Reacting sharply, Agada accused certain content creators of masquerading as genuine activists while pursuing selfish interests.
“To be honest, I am so exhausted. I think it is about time the party leadership got rid of these opportunistic content creators masquerading as activists,” he wrote on X.
“If the motivation is not campaign donations, why are you people fighting over leadership in your micro-movements? Shame on you all.”
The incident has reignited debates about the growing influence of digital content creators in Nigeria’s political space. While some have played pivotal roles in amplifying opposition messages, others have been accused of prioritising personal branding and financial rewards over ideological commitment.
The NDC has emerged as one of the major opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 elections, attracting high-profile figures including former Anambra governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate. The party, registered by INEC in February 2026 and led by former Bayelsa Governor Henry Seriake Dickson as its national leader, has positioned itself as the fastest-growing opposition force in the country.
