President Bola Tinubu has issued a resolute assurance to the nation, vowing that the Federal Government will defeat every form of terrorism and secure every part of Nigeria. The President made this declaration on Thursday during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja, where he also underscored the critical importance of national unity and consistent messaging from his administration.
Speaking after the swearing-in of two new ministers, the President confronted the country’s security challenges head-on. “Do we have problems? Yes. Are we challenged by terrorism? Yes. But we will defeat terrorism,” President Tinubu stated emphatically in his address to the cabinet. He charged all Nigerians not to succumb to despair, framing the fight against insecurity as a collective resolve. “Nigeria is one happy family, and we shall spare no effort until we eliminate all criminals from our society,” he affirmed.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces also highlighted Nigeria’s active diplomatic engagements, noting that the government is continuously working with international partners to bolster its efforts. “We want our friends to help us as we step up our fight against terrorism, and we will eliminate it,” he said, directly addressing the recent Country of Particular Concern (CPC) designation by the United States and expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome it.
Alongside the firm commitment on security, the council meeting served as a platform to showcase the nation’s positive economic trajectory. President Tinubu directed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, to present a detailed report on the nation’s economic performance, which revealed significant gains from the administration’s reforms.
Minister Edun reported that Nigeriaโs GDP grew by 4.23% in the second quarter of 2025, marking the highest growth rate in a decade, excluding the immediate post-COVID rebound. He attributed this robust performance to the “bold and sometimes unpopular” reforms under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which are aimed at building a competitive, job-creating economy.
Providing further evidence of macroeconomic stability, Edun announced that inflation had eased to 18.02% in September 2025, while foreign exchange reserves had topped $43 billion. Notably, the nationโs trade surplus reached N7.4 trillion. Perhaps one of the most telling indicators of improved living standards, according to the minister, is that citizens now spend about half of their income on basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing, a significant improvement from nearly 90% previously. “This signals a country moving from subsistence towards productivity and indeed affluence,” Edun stated.
The minister also pointed to a massive vote of international confidence: Nigeria’s recent $2.35 billion Eurobond issuance was oversubscribed by 400%, with the order book peaking at over $13 billion. “Despite the political headwindsโฆ the market shrugged off those political considerations and focused on the economic fundamentals of Nigeria,” Edun noted. He added that Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) Grey List marks a major milestone in strengthening the country’s financial integrity.
Looking forward, the Finance Minister confirmed that the vision of a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2030 is achievable, contingent on pursuing a 7% annual growth rate. He called for greater collaboration between federal ministers and sub-national governments to identify and package viable projects for investment, emphasizing that “every Naira must be optimised to sustain momentum.”
Guiding his team, President Tinubu called for consistency in communication and a unified purpose. “The task ahead is immense, but it is our resolve to move forward with unity and purpose, guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda to build a prosperous, inclusive and resilient Nigeria,” he concluded, weaving together the twin themes of security and economic prosperity as the foundation for the nation’s future.
