In a high profile legal battle, Nigerian gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a lawsuit against popular blogger Vincent Da Messiah (VDM) over alleged defamatory posts.
According to court documents obtained by journalists, Chinwo is seeking N1 billion in general damages, N100 million in punitive and aggravated damages, and an additional N25 million to cover the cost of the lawsuit. The case has sparked widespread interest, shedding light on the growing tension between celebrities and online personalities in Nigeria’s digital space.
The lawsuit stems from a series of social media posts by VDM, which Chinwo claims have tarnished her reputation and caused her emotional distress. While the specific content of the posts has not been disclosed, the singer’s legal team described them as “false, malicious, and defamatory.”
Chinwo, known for her hit songs and influential presence in the gospel music industry, has built a reputation as a role model for many young Nigerians. The alleged defamation, therefore, strikes at the heart of her public image and career.
In addition to the financial compensation, Chinwo has requested that the court order VDM to delete the offending posts from all his social media platforms. She has also demanded a public apology and the publication of retractions in four national newspapers for 14 consecutive days. These measures, according to her legal team, are necessary to restore her reputation and deter future defamatory actions.
VDM, known for his controversial and often sensational posts, has yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
