The United States has commended the Nigerian government following the conviction of 386 Islamist militants on terrorism-related charges, the US State Department announced Sunday.
This came as the Nigerian government concluded the trials of suspects whose cases had previously experienced delays in previous years.
The convictions represent a major breakthrough in the country’s long-running efforts to prosecute individuals linked to extremist groups operating across the northern region.
The statement was issued by Massad Boulos, the US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs. Boulos, operates through the US State Department, where he focuses on strengthening US-Africa ties, enhancing trade, and promoting private sector investment, including peace efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“We welcome the convictions of 386 Islamist militants in cases that had previously faced significant delays in the courts. We recognize this as an important step toward accountability and justice”, Boulos said.
He further noted that timely and transparent legal processes are critical in confronting extremism and reinforcing public trust in judicial institutions. “Upholding the rule of law remains essential to ensuring the safety, stability, and long-term security of all Nigerians,” Boulos added.
The announcement was flagged by Spear News Nigeria on X on Sunday. The US has pledged continued support for efforts to strengthen judicial efficiency and fairness across the country, as Nigeria battles a protracted Islamist insurgency that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since 2009.
