Grief, fear, and disbelief have taken over residents of Okitipupa in Ondo State following a horrific incident in which a 28-year-old man, identified as Femi Agbeye, allegedly killed three of his younger siblings with a machete in what has been described as one of the most disturbing family tragedies in recent times.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has plunged the quiet community into mourning, with neighbours and residents gathering in shock as news of the brutal killings spread. The victims—Bose Agbeye (20), Dupe Agbeye (7), and Blessing Agbeye (5)—were reportedly attacked in their home while their father was away.
According to reports from the scene, the father of the family raised alarm after returning home to discover the aftermath of the attack. In distress, he reported the incident to operatives of the Ondo State Police Command, who swiftly mobilised to the residence.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found the three victims lifeless, with visible signs of a violent machete attack. Their remains were immediately evacuated and transferred to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Okitipupa for preservation and autopsy, as investigations began.
The police confirmed that the suspect, Femi Agbeye, was arrested the same day the incident occurred, preventing what could have escalated into further chaos in the community.
The circumstances surrounding the killings remain unclear, and authorities have yet to establish a definitive motive behind the attack. However, early reports suggest the violence erupted within the family home, raising concerns about underlying tensions that may have gone unnoticed.
Community members described the Agbeye family as relatively quiet, making the violent turn of events even more difficult to comprehend. The loss of three young lives in such a brutal manner has left many struggling to process the tragedy.
Eyewitness accounts from neighbours suggest that the scene was chaotic and emotionally overwhelming, with people rushing to the house after hearing the distressing news. Some residents reportedly broke down in tears upon learning that children were among the victims.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as a “heinous and unacceptable act” that has no place in society.
He assured the public that the police are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the motive behind the attack and ensure that justice is served. Lawal also emphasized that the suspect would be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
The police have appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The incident has left the Okitipupa community in deep mourning. Families, friends, and neighbours have continued to visit the area to express condolences and support the grieving family.
The tragedy has also sparked broader conversations about the need for increased awareness around mental health, conflict resolution, and early intervention in domestic disputes. Many residents expressed concern that warning signs may have been missed before the incident escalated into violence.
Local leaders and community members are now calling for strengthened social support systems to help prevent similar occurrences in the future, especially in households where tension or instability may exist.
Beyond the immediate grief, this incident serves as a painful reminder of the fragility of human life and the devastating consequences of unchecked conflict within families. The loss of Bose, Dupe, and Blessing Agbeye has not only shattered one household but has also deeply affected an entire community.
As the investigation continues, residents of Okitipupa and beyond are left grappling with unanswered questions—how such a tragedy could unfold within a family, and what could have been done to prevent it.
For now, the focus remains on justice for the victims and support for the bereaved family as they navigate an unimaginable loss.
