Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that President Bola Tinubu has not shown the ability to solve Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
He described the situation as a clear failure of political leadership.
Atiku made these comments on Tuesday while meeting with a group of political leaders from Borno State. The delegation was led by Mohammed Kumalia. In a statement released by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, on Wednesday, Atiku expressed deep concern about the rising violence across the country.
He pointed to the increasing activities of armed groups, including kidnappings for ransom and killings. Atiku stressed that the government has failed to show the necessary determination to tackle these criminal networks.
“It is not anything that is beyond the capacity of the Nigerian security services to deal with. The government hasn’t shown the capacity to deal with it,” Atiku stated. He argued that without strong leadership willing to confront these criminal structures decisively, the problems cannot be resolved.
The former Vice President was particularly troubled by reports of armed groups taking control of entire local government areas. He called this situation unacceptable, noting that bandits and terrorists are imposing taxes on citizens and disrupting farming activities, which is harming food production and the economy.
Despite the grim assessment, Atiku welcomed what he called a growing unity among political leaders from different parties. He sees this as a positive step towards rescuing the country from its current troubles. “It is encouraging to see that more people, especially political leaders across the country, are increasingly becoming concerned about the deteriorating state of the Nigerian nation,” he said.
His discussion with the visitors from Borno focused largely on the severe insecurity, especially in northern Nigeria. They agreed that the occupation of Nigerian territories in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central states is a direct result of failed political leadership under President Tinubu’s government.
Atiku reiterated his belief that with the right political leadership, Nigeria’s security forces are capable of overcoming these challenges. He thanked the Borno stakeholders for their concern and affirmed his readiness to support any efforts aimed at bringing back peace and economic stability to the nation.
“I believe that with the right political leadership, Nigerian security forces have the capacity to take on the insecurity confronting the country,” he said. “It has become urgent for citizens to unite and rescue Nigeria.”
