Vice President Kashim Shettima will depart Abuja on Saturday, July 12, for São Tomé, the capital of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations.
The Vice President will join other African and international leaders at the grand finale of the Golden Jubilee events, marking five decades of the island nation’s sovereignty.
“The Vice President’s participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with São Tomé and Príncipe, a key partner in the Gulf of Guinea,” said Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).
The Independence Day celebration will feature a series of activities, including official speeches, military parades, cultural displays, and traditional performances showcasing the nation’s vibrant heritage.
Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe enjoy a robust bilateral relationship, anchored by the Nigeria-São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Authority (NSTPJDA), which oversees the Joint Development Zone (JDZ) for shared resource exploration.
“Beyond economic cooperation, Nigeria has consistently supported São Tomé and Príncipe through technical assistance, humanitarian donations, and pandemic relief efforts, including critical aid during the COVID-19 crisis,” Nkwocha added.
The Vice President’s delegation is expected to engage in high-level discussions aimed at further deepening collaboration between both nations.
Shettima is scheduled to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of the event.
