Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has berated the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its performance in Saturday’s Osun governorship election, accusing the party of abandoning its candidate and now attempting to take credit for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory.
In a series of posts on his official social media accounts on Sunday, Sani condemned the ADC’s approach to the election, noting that the party left its National Secretary and former two-term Governor to fend for himself in Osun, only to finish a distant third.
“The ADC left their National Secretary and former two-term Governor in Osun to struggle alone, and finished a distant third. Same attitude they demonstrated in the Edo, Anambra, Ondo and Ekiti elections. They have never won a single by-election since their emergence,” Sani wrote.
The former lawmaker further accused the ADC of trying to associate itself with Adeleke’s success despite failing to support its own candidate.
“The ADC want to latch on Adeleke’s victory and don’t want to talk about their candidate in Osun. If you are in politics, you will not have problems in knowing who are serious and who are not,” he added.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of the Osun governorship election.
INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, announced the final results at the collation centre in Osogbo, declaring that Adeleke polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 444,815 votes.
The ADC candidate, Dr. Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won 19 of the 30 local government areas in the state, while Oyebamiji took the remaining 11.
A total of 1,005,800 votes were cast, with 985,079 declared valid and 20,721 rejected. Other candidates, including those of the ADP, ZLP, APGA, and AAC, polled between 2,946 and 1,458 votes respectively.
Sani had earlier predicted a tough battle for Adeleke, suggesting that only a “miracle or magic” could save the incumbent governor due to a divided opposition. However, Adeleke defied the odds to secure a second term in office.
