Rivers State Police operatives have arrested one Mr Goodnews, 20, for alleged defilement of his neighbour’s 16-year old daughter along Apu road,Rupokwu in Obio/Akpor Local government area of the state.
A family friend to the victim’s parents, Chidi Obulor said the incident occurred on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Obulor explained that
the suspect who resides in the same compound with the victim, under the cover of sending her on an errand, brought her into his apartment where he allegedly defiled her.
When contacted, Police PPRO, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo confirmed the incident.
Agabe said “I can confirm the arrest of the suspect by operatives of Special Area Rumudomaya but investigation has also commenced”.
Meanwhile, a Human Rights Advocate, Prince Wiro who is also the National Coordinator of Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign has criticize some persons under the umbrella of a particular organization in the area for attempting to initiate settlement in the matter.
In Rivers State, Spear News investigation showed that the defilement of minors is a serious criminal offense prosecuted under the Criminal Code of the Laws.
Spear News recent findings even indicated a series of arrests and ongoing legal proceedings involving both individual suspects and groups.
In early 2026, several high-profile incidents have drawn significant attention from the state police command Command and human rights advocates.
In January this year, 45-year-old man identified as Pascal was accused of defiling two minors (an 11-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy) in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt.
The suspect was said to have attempted to “settle” the matter with the parents before police intervention.
Also, a family court in the state had ordered the remand of a father who allegedly attempted to “settle” a case involving the defilement of his five-year-old daughter rather than pursuing prosecution, police also arrested Emmanuel George, a 48-year-old man, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in a stationary tricycle (Keke Napep) in the Ada-George area, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Yet, Pastor Ifediorah Onyeibor Joseph and several church members were arrested following the dehumanization of 32 children (including minors) under the guise of “spiritual cleansing”
But the state commissioner of police has repeatedly vowed that perpetrators will face the “full wrath of the law” and has urged parents to report any suspicious activities.
