President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to prioritise the restoration of public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force as part of efforts to strengthen security nationwide.
The President gave the charge on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja, during the decoration of Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police.
The appointment follows the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun and is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.
The Police Council is scheduled to meet next week to deliberate on the appointment.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s ability to deliver on the demanding role, citing his track record of dedication and professionalism, particularly during his service in Lagos State when the President served as Governor.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President stated.
He urged the Acting IGP to lead firmly but fairly, and to demand professionalism at every level of the Force, emphasising that the safety of lives and property must remain the highest priority of his administration.
“It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” the President assured.
President Tinubu further directed Disu to align his efforts with the security pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda, charging him to bring innovation to bear in tackling the challenges of banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities threatening the nation.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President said.
He also paid tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse. The President described Egbetokun as a dedicated public servant whose contributions to maintaining law and order would be remembered with gratitude.
“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” Tinubu said.
He encouraged Egbetokun to remain available to offer useful advice to his successor, adding, “You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy.”
The President called on all security stakeholders to work collaboratively to safeguard lives and property during this critical period.
The ceremony was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori; AIG Hakeem Odumosu (rtd); senior government officials; as well as the parents and family members of the Acting Inspector-General of Police.
