President Bola Tinubu has again bid an emotional farewell to his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as “a friend, a brother, and a patriot.”
The heartfelt message followed Buhari’s burial in Daura on Wednesday, with Tinubu reflecting on their shared journey in nation building.
“Yesterday was a solemn and deeply emotional day for me,” President Tinubu wrote. “We laid to rest a man I was proud to call a friend, a brother, and a patriotโฆ His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”
The President honoured Buhari’s legacy of service, praising his unwavering commitment to Nigeria:
“Mai Gaskiya was not just a former president. He was a man of rare discipline and quiet strength, whose love for Nigeria shaped every decision he made, even in the face of criticism.”
Tinubu also acknowledged the personal loss he felt, describing Buhari as “a comrade in the long and often lonely journey of nation-building.” He extended condolences to the late president’s family, particularly his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, praying they find comfort in his enduring legacy.
The tribute concluded with a poignant farewell: “Nigeria has lost a true son. I have lost a friend in former President Buhari. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus. Rest well, ‘Baba Buhari.”
Buhari, Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, passed away on Sunday 12 July, 2025 in a London hospital. His burial was attended by regional leaders, global dignitaries and thousands of Nigerians, reflecting his stature as a statesman.
