President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has personally reached out to console Nigerian-British boxing icon Anthony Joshua and his mother following a tragic road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
According to a State House press release issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President, who is currently abroad, held a telephone conversation with the former heavyweight champion earlier today.
The accident resulted in injuries to Joshua and, tragically, the death of two of his associates.
During the call, President Tinubu conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Joshua over the loss of his companions. āI spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him,ā the President was quoted as saying. āHe assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital.ā
Demonstrating a personal touch, the President also spoke directly with Joshuaās mother. āI also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call,ā President Tinubu added.
To ensure comprehensive support, the President further engaged Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was present at the hospital. āThe Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,ā the President stated.
Earlier, President Tinubu had expressed his profound sympathy in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Addressing Joshua directly, the President wrote: āI sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.ā
The President’s message emphasized solidarity, noting, āIn moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.ā He concluded with prayers for āstrength, wisdom, and graceā for Joshua, a speedy recovery, and eternal rest for the souls of the departed.
