The police command in Oyo State has arrested three suspected armed robbers and recovered a toy pistol during a patrol operation around Awolowo Road in the Bodija area of Ibadan.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement in Ibadan on Tuesday.
Mr Olayinka said operatives attached to the Bodija Housing Division intercepted a Bajaj motorcycle during a routine stop and search operation on Monday at about 12.30 p.m. along Awolowo Road.
He stated that the motorcycle with registration number BDJ 386 QH was being ridden by a 26 year old man while conveying two pillion passengers, all residents of Gbaremu in Ibadan.
According to him, the interception was based on reasonable suspicion, which led officers to conduct a thorough search of the suspects and their belongings.
“In the course of the search, a toy pistol concealed in a black bag was recovered alongside six different mobile phones,” he said.
He noted that the discovery raised further suspicion and led to the immediate arrest of the suspects, as it indicated possible involvement in criminal activities.
Mr Olayinka added that the suspects confessed to engaging in robbery, where they dispossessed unsuspecting members of the public of their valuables.
He explained that the confessional statements provided useful leads for ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering the full extent of their activities and identifying possible accomplices.
The suspects have since been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Mr Olayinka said the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Olugbenga, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, while also urging members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to aid policing efforts.
