The Benue State Police Command has announced a breakthrough in the investigation of a recent deadly attack on the Anwule community in Ohimini Local Government Area, with the arrest of three suspects, including a local vigilante commander and a herdsman.
The arrests follow weeks of investigation into the assault that left several people dead, including a pastor, sending shockwaves through the state.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, the suspects have been identified as Isah Peter, the acting commander of the Eguma community vigilante group; Moses Peter, also from Agatu LGA; and a Fulani herdsman whose name was not immediately released.
The case took a dramatic turn with the revelation that Isah Peter, 22, a figure entrusted with protecting his community, is alleged to have used an official vigilante firearm to carry out the violent attack.
During interrogation, the vigilante commander confessed to acting on the orders of a man known only as “Pepper,” who allegedly supplied the weapon used in the crime. Isah also admitted to involvement in a series of other violent incidents along the volatile Otukpo–Oweto highway.
This arrest has cast a harsh spotlight on the deteriorating security along the major transport corridor. Over the past year, the road has become notorious for kidnappings and killings perpetrated by armed gangs, with residents and travelers often forced to move only during daylight hours or under police escort.
The involvement of a vigilante leader has drawn sharp criticism from civil society. Human rights activist Meddy Olotu, reacting to the news, stated, “It is shocking that those entrusted with community protection have become instruments of terror. Security agencies must conduct a full investigation to restore safety along the Otukpo–Oweto highway.”
The Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing and further arrests are expected as they work to dismantle the wider criminal network responsible for the attacks in the region.
