The Anambra State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing fight against armed robbery, arresting three suspects and recovering a cache of weapons in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, in an operation that has further exposed the activities of a suspected criminal syndicate operating within the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu carried out the arrest on March 21 following sustained intelligence gathering, investigations, and interrogations that had been ongoing in the area. The operation, he said, was a continuation of earlier efforts by the command to dismantle criminal networks and restore security in affected communities.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspects were linked to a wider criminal gang involved in armed robbery activities and that further investigations led to the identification and arrest of the group’s alleged ringleader. The suspect, identified as Chukwuka Anene, a 46-year-old male, reportedly confessed to being the armourer of the syndicate, a role that placed him in charge of sourcing and maintaining weapons used by the gang.
Following his arrest, the suspect allegedly led police operatives to the gang’s hideout in Ogidi, where a range of dangerous weapons and items were recovered. Among the items seized were two pump-action guns, two locally made Beretta pistols, five rounds of 9mm ammunition, seven live cartridges, a beret suspected to be linked to a cult group, and a piece of body armour. The recovery, according to the police, points to a well-equipped criminal network with access to firearms and tactical gear.
The Anambra State Police Command described the development as part of its sustained efforts to curb violent crime and dismantle criminal syndicates operating across the state. Authorities noted that the operation was intelligence-driven, reflecting improved collaboration between security operatives and information sources within local communities.
Ikenga stated that the command has intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang, stressing that investigations are still ongoing and further updates will be provided as the case progresses. He reiterated the commitment of the police to ensuring the safety and security of residents across Anambra State, urging members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information.
The latest arrests come amid a series of coordinated police operations across the state aimed at tackling armed robbery, kidnapping, and related violent crimes. In recent weeks, the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, has reportedly recorded multiple breakthroughs, including the busting of criminal gangs involved in hijacking vehicles from unsuspecting transporters and engaging in other forms of organized crime.
In a related development reported earlier, police operatives had uncovered another five-member gang operating in Ihiala Local Government Area, where suspects were arrested and weapons recovered during a targeted operation. The group was believed to specialise in robbing commercial transporters and dispossessing victims of their vehicles and valuables. Items recovered from that operation included firearms, stolen motorcycles, and other incriminating materials, underscoring the scale and sophistication of criminal activities being tackled by the police in the state.
Security agencies in Anambra have continued to intensify patrols, intelligence gathering, and community engagement in a bid to sustain the momentum against criminal elements. The police command has repeatedly called on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasising that community cooperation remains critical in maintaining law and order.
While the arrest of the three suspects represents a significant step forward, authorities acknowledge that more work remains to be done to fully dismantle the network and prevent similar criminal activities. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to track down other members of the gang are said to be in advanced stages as security operatives continue their operations across identified hotspots.
The Anambra State Police Command has assured residents that it will not relent in its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while maintaining sustained pressure on criminal networks operating within the region.
