The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has abruptly postponed the screening of aspirants for its upcoming Elective National Convention, throwing a key phase of its internal electoral process into disarray just one day before it was set to begin.
In a terse press release issued on Monday, the party’s National Convention Organizing Committee (NCOC) announced the indefinite postponement of the exercise, which was scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The committee cited only “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the sudden delay.
The screening is a critical step in the lead-up to the partyโs national convention, where new national officers will be elected. The postponement affects all aspirants vying for various positions within the party’s hierarchy, who must be cleared by the screening committee before they can contest.
The release, signed by the NCOC Chairman and Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, stated that a new date “will be communicated once fixed.” It also expressed regret for “any inconveniences caused by the postponement.”
The last-minute nature of the delay is likely to fuel speculation and anxiety within the party ranks. Political analysts suggest that such a sudden shift could be linked to several factors, including unresolved disputes over aspirants’ eligibility, last-minute negotiations between powerful party blocs, or logistical challenges.
Despite the setback, the NCOC sought to reassure party members of its commitment to the main event. The statement reaffirmed that the committee remains “committed to delivering a credible, hitch-free 2025 Elective National Convention” scheduled for November 15th and 16th in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
All aspirants and party members have been urged to “note the foregoing and be guided accordingly.”
As of the time of this report, aspirants and their camps are likely locked in frantic consultations, seeking clarity on the reasons behind the postponement and the new timeline for the screening process.
