Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirmed on Friday that it was considering disciplinary action against Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike over alleged anti-party activities, signaling an escalation of the party’s internal crisis.
The party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed on Arise News that a disciplinary committee is currently reviewing formal petitions against Wike and other members accused of undermining party unity and electoral performance.
The controversial former Rivers State governor has been a focal point of political tensions since his unprecedented decision to work for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 elections while maintaining PDP membership.
His subsequent appointment as FCT Minister by President Bola Tinubu further exacerbated rifts with the PDP leadership.
“If Wike is not going to be to the advantage of the PDP, he can bid the PDP farewell. Certainly, we won’t allow any individual to hold the party to ransom”, Abdullahi said.
The PDP’s tough stance signals its determination to enforce party discipline ahead of the 2027 elections. However, political analysts caution that expelling Wike could backfire, potentially deepening divisions within the party – particularly in the South-South region where the former Rivers governor maintains substantial political clout.
Although the disciplinary committee has yet to finalise its recommendations, Abdullahi’s public statements indicate the party leadership may be laying the groundwork for a decisive separation. This strategic positioning suggests the PDP is preparing its members and the public for a potential rupture with one of its most prominent – yet controversial – figures.
“We’ve received several petitions regarding anti-party activities,” he said. “Wike is said to be among those named, and once the committee submits its recommendations, there’ll be no stopping us from taking action.”
However, expelling Wike is not without risk. His grassroots network and strong political presence in Rivers State make him a formidable player in the party.
