Former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Barr. Nkeiruka C. Onyejeocha, PhD, OON, has commended the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for turning the national spotlight on Abia’s female artisans through her historic visit to the Akwete weaving community.
In a statement issued by her media office, Onyejeocha, who represents Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2023, described the First Lady’s visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society as a defining moment for the generations of women who have sustained the craft through centuries of dedication and resilience.
“Her Excellency’s decision to visit Akwete is a powerful signal that the toil, talent, and tenacity of our female artisans are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. For too long, these women have laboured in the shadows, preserving a cultural treasure without the national appreciation they have earned. Today, that chansayin Onyejeocha was quoted as saying.
During her visit, the First Lady, under the hospitality of Governor Alex Otti and the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, is slated to tour the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society, where she will observe the time-honored craftsmanship that has propelled Akwete textiles onto the global stage.
Onyejeocha praised Senator Tinubu for her sustained commitment to women’s empowerment and cultural preservation, noting that the First Lady’s presence brings renewed hope to local artisans whose livelihoods depend on the industry.
“When the First Lady of the Federation takes time to sit with our weavers, to touch the fabrics, and to honour their skill, she is telling every woman in Abia, and indeed every woman in Nigeria, that their work matters,” she added.
The former minister, who served in President Tinubu’s cabinet, similarly thanked Governor Otti and his wife for their hand in organising the visit and guaranteeing the First Lady a warm and dignified welcome.
She expressed confidence that the visit would open new doors for investment in the Akwete weaving industry, creating more economic opportunities for women and young people in the region.
“This visit is not just about today. It is about tomorrow. It is about ensuring that our daughters and granddaughters can continue this beautiful tradition with dignity, knowing that their work is celebrated from Abia to Abuja and beyond,” Onyejeocha said.
Welcoming Senator Tinubu to Abia, she declared: “Your Excellency, you are home. God’s Own State welcomes you with open arms and proud hearts.”
Marking her first official foray into the South-East for the year, the First Lady’s visit to Abia is set to train national attention on the time-honoured tradition of Akwete textile-making. Following the cooperative visit, a grand civic reception awaits at the Akwete Central School Field.
