Former United States President Barack Obama has issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump following the Democratic Party’s victories in the 2026 midterm elections, calling for urgent action to prevent what he described as further damage by the current administration.
Obama, reacting to the Republican Party’s major electoral defeat, urged Democrats to use their newly gained political influence to challenge the Trump administration’s policies, push for change and lay the groundwork for the country’s future.
“Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face,” Obama declared.
He praised Democratic candidates across the country, particularly those who secured victories in areas previously considered difficult for the party to win.
According to him, the candidates came from diverse backgrounds and held different political views but shared a commitment to public service and the interests of their constituents.
Obama also commended election officials and volunteers from both major political parties for their contributions to the successful conduct of the elections.
He described their efforts as essential to protecting American democracy.
Turning his attention to the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency, Obama urged Democrats to move beyond celebrating their victories and begin taking concrete steps to influence the country’s direction.
“While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future,” he said.
His statement came as the Democratic Party celebrated significant electoral gains that could dramatically alter the balance of power in Washington.
The results represent a major political setback for Trump, whose Republican Party had controlled both chambers of Congress.
With the Democrats securing the Senate and projected to take the House, the opposition could gain greater influence over legislation, congressional investigations and oversight of the Trump administration.
The Democratic victories followed widespread voter concerns over rising living costs, inflation, healthcare expenses and the administration’s policies.
Trump, however, has congratulated the Democrats while rejecting suggestions that the election results amount to a personal rejection of his leadership.
The president maintained that his administration had delivered exceptional achievements despite the Republican Party’s electoral losses.
