US President Donald Trump is set to face a Congress controlled by his political opposition after the Democratic Party secured victories in both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.
The results mark a significant shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with Democrats capturing control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, ending the Republican Party’s dominance of Congress.
The Democratic victories mean Trump could face considerable legislative resistance during the final two years of his presidency, as the opposition party prepares to assume control of both chambers when the new Congress takes office in January 2027.
With control of the Senate, Democrats will have greater authority over legislative proceedings and presidential nominations, including appointments to key government positions and the federal judiciary.
In the House of Representatives, the party will also gain control of committees, opening the door to congressional investigations, oversight hearings and increased scrutiny of the Trump administration.
The election outcome follows a series of closely contested races across the country, with Democrats recording notable victories in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio and South Carolina.
The results also represent a major reversal of the political balance established after the 2024 presidential election, when Republicans secured control of both chambers alongside Trump’s return to the White House.
Although Trump will remain president and retain his executive powers, the new congressional balance is expected to complicate efforts to advance his legislative agenda without bipartisan cooperation.
The Democratic takeover could also reshape the political atmosphere ahead of the 2028 presidential election, as both parties begin positioning themselves for the next national contest.
The outcome of the midterms places the United States on course for a period of divided government, with the presidency remaining in Republican hands while both chambers of the legislature move under Democratic control.
