The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has identified a faulty track switch and systemic poor maintenance as the primary causes of the August 26th train derailment on the Abuja-Kaduna route.
The incident, which resulted in 21 injuries among the 618 passengers on board, occurred at Asham Stationโthe same location where a derailment happened 13 months prior.
According to the NSIB’s preliminary report released on Tuesday, the automatic switch mechanism at the station’s crossing point was unserviceable. Consequently, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) personnel were forced to manually operate the switch using a point clip, which was later found to be broken. This failure compromised the track’s alignment and led to the derailment.
The investigation further uncovered critical lapses in maintenance. Several concrete sleepers (the base supports for the rails) that had been damaged in the previous incident were merely “patched” instead of being properly replaced, creating a weak point in the infrastructure.
The NSIB’s findings point to broader systemic issues within the railway corporation. The report noted that NRC personnel had received only initial training with no formal refresher courses. Additionally, essential operational and maintenance tools, including genuine spare parts from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), were largely inaccessible.
In response to these findings, the NSIB has issued urgent safety recommendations to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). These include:
ยท Replacing all compromised sleepers and damaged components along the corridor.
ยท Installing OEM-standard point switches to restore automated safety functions.
ยท Restoring all defective monitoring equipment, including CCTV cameras and communication systems.
ยท Implementing regular refresher training programs for all operational staff.
The Bureau emphasized that these findings are preliminary and that its investigation is ongoing. Next steps include a detailed technical inspection of the locomotives and coaches, analysis of operational data, and interviews with crew and eyewitnesses. A final report will be released at the conclusion of the probe.
