The legal dispute between two traditional rulers in Ogun State has taken a significant turn, with the case now moving from the state police to the federal government.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has formally taken over the prosecution of Oba Adedayo Shyllon, the Alagbado of Agbado, who is accused of cyberstalking and threatening the life of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.
This change in who is leading the prosecution follows an order from the Federal High Court in Abeokuta. Justice Abiodun Adeyemi granted the request, which was made by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation.
The judge’s order, dated September 24, 2025, states that the case is now under the control of the AGF’s office, in line with Section 174 of the Nigerian Constitution.
The court has directed that official copies of this order be sent to the Inspector-General of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 2 in Lagos, and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police. This is to ensure that all relevant police authorities are aware of the change and can act accordingly.
The case against Oba Shyllon began after the Alake, a highly respected paramount ruler, submitted a petition to the police. The petition alleged that Oba Shyllon had been involved in online posts that threatened his life. Based on this, the Ogun State Police Command brought two criminal charges against the monarch.
However, Oba Shyllon has consistently denied these allegations. He maintains that he himself was a victim of false online reporting and had previously reported the matter to the Zone II Police Command in Lagos. He claims that his own petition was still being looked into when he was unexpectedly invited by the Ogun State police and subsequently charged to court.
