The Rivers State House of Assembly has declared its resolve to proceed with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalaye Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, dismissing rumours of a halt as misinformation.
This was contained in a press statement issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Dr. Enemi Alabo George.
The legislature assured the public that the process, initiated on January 8, is “fully on course” and in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution.
The statement revealed that notices of allegations of gross misconduct, served pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution, have been formally delivered to the Governor and Deputy Governor by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule. The House is now awaiting their responses as stipulated by law.
Pushing back against what it called a wave of disinformation, the Assembly accused certain individuals and media platforms of trending “false narratives” intended to cause disaffection and wrongly suggest the process had been discontinued.
“Therefore, with the leave of the Speaker, I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed. We remain committed to our constitutional duties and would not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for our country’s nascent democracy”, the statement read.
The House framed its action as a constitutional duty to check executive infractions, asserting its role as the people’s representatives.
“It is the House of Assembly that is empowered by the Constitution to stand by the people and stop infractions on the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor or any other officer of the Rivers State Government,” George stated.
The Assembly concluded by thanking the people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement, and extended its regards to stakeholders and “all democrats who believe in the Nigerian project.”
