The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced it will phase out cash transactions at the country’s airports, beginning with Lagos and Abuja, in a significant move to digitise revenue collection.
The initiative, launched in partnership with fintech company Paystack and dubbed โOperation Go Cashless,โ marks the start of a nationwide policy shift for the authority, which has historically collected most of its revenue in cash.
In a statement posted on its X handle on Thursday, FAAN stated that effective September 29, 2025, all payments at its revenue pointsโincluding airport access gates, car parks, VIP areas, and protocol loungesโmust be made using contactless methods.
The policy is designed to provide a faster, safer, and more seamless experience for travellers while boosting operational efficiency and financial transparency.
โTravellers and airport users will now enjoy fast and seamless services by using a secure contactless payment option,โ the statement read. โThis initiative responds to the growing demand for safe, modern, and transparent payment systems while ensuring Nigeriaโs airports remain aligned with global digital trends. By reducing reliance on cash, FAAN aims to enhance efficiency, improve revenue assurance, and deliver a better customer experience.โ
To ensure a smooth transition, FAAN has deployed trained brand ambassadors at terminals in Lagos and Abuja to guide passengers, assist with onboarding, and answer questions.
Additionally, travellers can obtain a dedicated โFAAN Go Cashless Cardโ at airport access gates. After collection, users are encouraged to activate and fund their cards immediately by visiting http://www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng.
The authority confirmed that the cashless policy will be rolled out to other airports across Nigeria in phases, as part of its broader commitment to digital transformation.
