The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has clarified that no fire broke out at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, contrary to initial reports that sparked widespread concern on Saturday.
In an advisory issued on 1st August 2026, FAAN had confirmed what it described as a fire incident at the international terminal, stating that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service had been deployed to contain the situation.
Multiple news outlets subsequently reported an outbreak at the facility, with the authority assuring the public that no casualties had been recorded.
However, in an updated statement released on Sunday by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN said preliminary findings revealed that there was no fire at the terminal. According to the authority, the smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The cause of the system’s activation is currently being investigated.
Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, and FAAN has reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of all airport operations while thanking passengers, airlines, and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation.
