The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has conducted a highly successful series of airstrikes against armed bandits operating across several communities in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, marking a significant victory in the ongoing campaign against rural insurgency and criminal networks terrorizing the North Central region.
According to reliable sources and eyewitness accounts, the precision air operation targeted a convoy of heavily armed bandits as they moved through the villages of Yabawa, Bazana, Awallah, Dankolo, and Kumbashi, while en route to Kakihum. The group was reportedly transporting a large herd of stolen cattle believed to have been taken from Ragada and surrounding communities during a recent wave of attacks.
Military intelligence confirmed that NAF fighter jets, acting on credible surveillance reports, intercepted the movement and launched a coordinated strike that neutralized several of the criminals and disrupted their operations. The precision bombardment, described by locals as intense and highly effective, forced surviving bandits to flee in disarray into nearby forested areas.
Residents of the affected communities recounted moments of relief and astonishment as the air assault unfolded. One eyewitness, a resident of Ragada who had previously been abducted by the criminals and taken toward Dankolo, described his narrow escape during the offensive. āWhen the jet began bombing, God saved me; that was how I escaped from their hands,ā he said, still shaken by the experience but thankful for his survival.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the airstrikes occurred while the bandits were still in transit, rather than at a fixed hideout, a rare feat that underscores the accuracy of the operation. Villagers observing from a distance reported hearing multiple explosions, followed by thick plumes of smoke and bursts of sporadic gunfire as the disorganized bandits attempted to escape.
Ground troops stationed in Rijau, Warari, and Gulbin Boka were said to have supported the aerial mission by sealing off possible escape routes and securing surrounding communities to prevent reprisal attacks. The ground coordination, according to local security sources, ensured that the fleeing bandits could not regroup or retaliate against civilians. The joint operation also safeguarded several internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently sheltering in nearby settlements following earlier attacks in the region.
Residents of Mariga and neighbouring areas have praised the military for the precision and timeliness of the operation, describing it as the most effective response yet to the renewed surge in violence. āIf both the bandits and the stolen cattle perish together, so be it. What we want is peace to return to our land,ā one villager said, reflecting the deep frustration and exhaustion felt by communities that have endured years of insecurity.
Reports from local security observers suggest that the operation may have disrupted a larger network of bandit groups active across the MarigaāRijauāMagama corridor. Intelligence gathered over the past week indicated the presence of at least seven heavily armed factions operating in the area, with some reportedly linked to cross-border smuggling and cattle rustling rings extending into the North West.
Additional intelligence also revealed that another armed group, believed to be transporting stolen cattle from Magama Local Government Area, was last seen heading toward the KakihumāKumbashi axis. This has prompted renewed calls from residents and community leaders for sustained aerial and ground surveillance to prevent a resurgence of attacks.
Security analysts have commended the Air Force for its growing precision in executing targeted strikes that minimize collateral damage while delivering maximum impact against hostile elements. The latest airstrike, they noted, demonstrates the increasing effectiveness of Nigeriaās counter-banditry operations, which now rely on improved coordination between air and ground units, as well as enhanced intelligence-sharing capabilities.
The successful Mariga airstrike has not only boosted the morale of the Nigerian Armed Forces but also restored a measure of confidence among local populations who have long suffered from banditry and rural terrorism. Many residents have expressed renewed faith in the militaryās capacity to restore peace and security to their communities.
As calm gradually returns to the affected axis, the Nigerian Air Force and the broader security apparatus continue to monitor the region for potential regrouping of criminal elements. Authorities have assured that operations will be sustained until the remnants of bandit networks in Niger State and surrounding regions are completely dismantled.
The latest operation stands as one of the most precise and morale-boosting missions in recent times, reaffirming the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to protecting lives, restoring order, and eliminating banditry from every corner of the nation.
