Armed bandits have killed a woman and her daughter during a violent attack on a poultry farm in Ondo State, in what authorities have described as a heinous and deeply disturbing incident.
The attack, which occurred on Thursday at Igushi via Ala in Akure North Local Government Area, has once again highlighted growing security concerns in parts of the state, particularly in rural communities where residents remain vulnerable to criminal activities.
According to reports, the assailants, numbering about five, stormed the poultry farm and carried out the deadly assault. The victims, identified as the farm owner and her daughter, were said to have been working at the facility alongside others when the gunmen struck. The attackers reportedly targeted the location in what is believed to be a kidnapping attempt that turned fatal.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday, expressing strong condemnation of the killings and describing the act as senseless and tragic. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abayomi Jimoh, stated that although two lives were lost in the attack, security operatives were able to rescue two other victims alive during a swift response operation.
“The police command in Ondo State strongly condemns the heinous, violent incident at Igushin via Ala, Akure, which led to the tragic loss of two innocent lives,” Jimoh said.
“While two victims were successfully rescued through a swift and coordinated operation, the command expresses deep sorrow over the unfortunate deaths recorded,” he added.
Jimoh assured residents that the police have intensified security measures across the area to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of lives and property. He noted that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend those responsible for the crime.
The police spokesman further reiterated the command’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice, stressing that such acts of violence would not go unpunished. He also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could aid ongoing investigations.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns among residents of Akure North and surrounding communities, many of whom have expressed fears over increasing cases of banditry and kidnapping in the region. Rural farmers, in particular, have become frequent targets, raising questions about the safety of agricultural activities in affected areas.
Security analysts have often warned that attacks on farming communities not only threaten lives but also pose risks to food security, as farmers may be forced to abandon their lands due to fear of violence.
As investigations continue, authorities have reassured the public of their resolve to curb criminal activities and restore confidence in the security framework across Ondo State.
The Ondo State Government is yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
