The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits within the vicinity of Akure Airport in Ondo State, following a coordinated security operation involving aviation and local security agencies.
The suspects were apprehended on Saturday after security personnel responded to a distress alert reporting the presence of suspicious individuals behind the airport perimeter, towards the Eleyewo community.
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN disclosed that a joint search operation was immediately launched involving its Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and other local security outfits. During the operation, some individuals were sighted attempting to flee the area, leading to the eventual arrest of four suspects.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation and investigation.
FAAN commended the swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and local security groups, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, whose joint efforts led to the successful apprehension.
The incident has highlighted the critical need to strengthen airport perimeter protection. According to the statement, the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and with the support of the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has accelerated the provision of modern perimeter fencing and enhanced security infrastructure at airports across the country.
Work has already commenced in phases to ensure that airports under FAAN’s management are better secured against unlawful access and other security threats.
FAAN reassured the travelling public and airport host communities of its unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all airport facilities nationwide.
