Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State, vowing there would be no retreat from his ambition.
Malami made his declaration on Monday morning, stating that he had the backing of the people of the state and was committed to what he termed a rescue mission.
Speaking during an interview with DCL Hausa, the former minister outlined his motivation for entering the race.
“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win because we have people who believe in us, and we will not let them down,” he said.
While acknowledging that INEC guidelines currently prohibit official campaign mobilisation, Mr Malami expressed strong confidence in his grassroots support.
“INEC guidelines do not allow us to begin any form of mobilisation yet, but I assure you that when the time comes, you will see that we have the support of the people of Kebbi State,” he added.
In a significant critique of his own party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Malami stated that the party had caused hardship, particularly in northern Nigeria.
He cited persistent insecurity as a primary failure, noting that many farmers had been forced away from their farms.
He asserted that these challenges had persisted due to negligence at both the state and federal levels, pointing to the economic impact on local industry.
“Today, rice mills that operated actively for 20 years have shut down due to bad policies that favour foreign companies,” he said.
The former justice minister framed his candidacy as a necessary intervention to address these failures. He explained that he would contest to “salvage Kebbi State from insecurity, restore and revive farming, and protect the interests of the people”.
Concluding his argument, Malami directly refuted any suggestion that his decision was driven by self-interest, insisting his focus was solely on the state’s welfare. He refuted the claim that his decision to run was based on personal gain, adding that he was committed to a rescue mission for the state.
