The Senator Nenadi Usman-led leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has broken its silence regarding a recent communication from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announcing that all concerns raised by the electoral body have been “conclusively addressed” in accordance with the law.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, the Party addressed what it described as a letter “currently in circulation” regarding the status of its State Executives.
According to the Party, INEC had drawn its attention to the fact that an earlier notification regarding the dissolution of Interim State Working Committees did not meet the required statutory notice period.
Following that communication, the Usman-led faction assured members that it has taken immediate corrective measures.
“Following the communication from INEC, the leadership of the Party has, in full compliance with the Party’s Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the relevant INEC guidelines, taken all the necessary steps to conclusively address the concerns raised by the Commission,” the statement read.
The statement, signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Assistant (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, dismissed the circulating letter as “old news” that is being recycled by disgruntled opponents.
The Party characterized those attempting to make political capital out of the INEC correspondence as “discredited former members” who are “desperately clutching at every available straw in a futile effort to create confusion.”
“They are politically irrelevant former members of the Party who are shamelessly throwing tantrums in public,” the statement added, urging the media and the public to disregard what it termed “beer-parlour gossip.”
Despite the internal conflicts and contestations regarding parallel executives, the Party leadership insisted that it remains “focused and on course.” It called on its teeming supporters to ignore the “antics of certain mischievous elements” and instead channel their energy into the ongoing membership revalidation and new registration exercise.
“Party members are also encouraged to prepare for the forthcoming Party Congresses and National Convention as scheduled,” the statement concluded, signaling that the faction intends to proceed with its internal mobilization calendar regardless of the distractions.
