Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, will formally return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, 26 January 2026, after resigning from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) late last week.
The Governorโs spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed the move in a detailed statement released on Sunday, marking a significant shift in the stateโs political landscape.
Governor Yusufโs return represents a homecoming of sorts; he first joined the APC in 2014 when he secured the partyโs ticket for the Kano Central Senatorial election, a position he later conceded to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. His journey since has included engagements across various political platforms, most recently the NNPP.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf attributed his decision to โprevailing realities of governance, national cohesion and development.โ He described the APC as โa familiar and structured platform for progressive governance,โ suggesting the move is strategic for advancing his administrationโs objectives.
The Governor emphasized that rejoining the APC will deepen cooperation with the Federal Government, speed up infrastructural projects, improve security coordination, and enhance public service delivery across Kano. He added that the decision is expected to foster greater political stability and unity within the state.
The formal registration event on Monday is set to be a mass defection, with Governor Yusuf to be joined by 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 Local Government Chairmen. This collective move is poised to consolidate the APCโs dominance in Kanoโs legislative and executive structures.
As part of Mondayโs activities, the Governor is also scheduled to officially launch the APCโs e-registration exercise in Kano, a step aimed at modernizing and expanding the partyโs membership base in the state.
