Kaduna, Nigeria – In a move that has ended a month-long industrial action, Governor Uba Sani has approved a significant 70% salary increase for staff of all state-owned tertiary institutions.
The approval for the implementation of 70% of the 2024 CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure was confirmed on Wednesday, following a crucial meeting at the Government House between the governor and the leaders of the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions (JUTIKS). The meeting was facilitated by the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The unions had embarked on a strike on September 30, 2025, demanding the implementation of a 2009 salary structure, improved retirement benefits, and better general welfare for their members.
Following the resolution, union leaders held a joint press conference where they commended Governor Sani for his “leadership, transparency, and commitment to education and workers’ rights.”
Key outcomes of the meeting include:
· A 70% implementation of the 2024 CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure for both academic and non-academic staff, effective from October 2025.
· Approval of a new retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service for non-teaching staff.
Before this approval, many junior staff members, including lecturers, were receiving meager take-home pay. A junior lecturer at Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that his monthly salary after deductions was just N64,000.
The resolution and subsequent suspension of the strike have been hailed as a major victory for the education sector and workers’ welfare in Kaduna State.
