The Labour Party (LP) has urged Nigerians not to surrender to despair despite the nation’s unfulfilled democratic aspirations, declaring that the country’s best days are still ahead.
In a press release commemorating Democracy Day on June 12, 2026, the party extended warm felicitations to citizens at home and in the diaspora, calling on the nation to reflect on the sacrifices of heroes past, particularly the late Chief MKO Abiola.
“We must ensure that their labours were not in vain,” the party stated, acknowledging that while Nigeria’s democratic journey has been marked by missed opportunities, hope should remain the prevailing national disposition.
The Labour Party described democracy as the best form of government known to mankind, not merely for the opportunity to elect leaders periodically, but because it remains the most participatory system of governance, placing the people at the centre of public affairs.
However, the party also challenged those at the helm of affairs to do more, urging them to address pressing national challenges including insecurity, economic hardship, hunger, unemployment, and deficits in critical infrastructure.
“The dividends of democracy must be felt by the ordinary citizen whose welfare remains the ultimate justification for government,” the statement read.
Reaffirming its guiding principles of Equal Opportunity and Social Justice, the Labour Party warned that any democracy that fails to guarantee a level playing field for all citizens and political actors is merely “a distorted and pretentious version of democratic governance.”
As the nation gradually approaches another electoral cycle, the party enjoined Nigerians not to lose faith in the possibility of a better country. The Labour Party reaffirmed its commitment to providing a credible platform through which the aspirations of the Nigerian people can be realised.
“From the legislative chambers to the presidency, the party has continued to entrust its mandate to men and women of proven character, competence and capacity,” the statement added, describing them as individuals capable of rewriting the Nigerian story and leading the nation toward greater prosperity, justice, and national renewal.
The message concluded with a simple patriotic declaration: “Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria!”
The press release was signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, dated June 12, 2026.
