In a notable political development, former President Goodluck Jonathan has added his voice to the growing demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This follows a meeting in Abuja with human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore shared details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Jonathan agreed on the urgent need to resolve Kanu’s case “decisively and justly.” According to Sowore, the former president recognised that settling the matter was crucial for “peace, fairness, and national healing” and promised to raise the issue directly with President Bola Tinubu.
Sowore described this as a significant step, thanking Jonathan for joining other prominent figures like former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and lawyer Femi Falana in calling for Kanu’s freedom. He reiterated his view that Kanu’s continued detention is a symbol of injustice and that he should be released, just as other regional activists with political cases have been.
This meeting comes amid Sowore’s broader campaign, which includes plans for a peaceful protest in Abuja on October 20 under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow. He is demanding that the government obey court orders that have previously called for Kanu’s release.
The presidency has previously dismissed such protests as “needless agitation.
