The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), working directly with United States military assets, have conducted a series of precision airstrikes against identified foreign terrorist fighters linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in the North West region.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), in a statement on Friday, confirmed that the operation targeted ISIS-West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements who had established a presence in the area.
The strike was authorized by the highest levels of the Federal Government and was based on credible, actionable intelligence.
“This operation forms a critical part of our ongoing, coordinated efforts to rid the nation of terrorists and other violent criminal networks that threaten our national security,” the statement read.
It emphasized that the meticulous planning was designed to maximally degrade the operational capability of the foreign fighters while ensuring minimal collateral damage.
Military analysts view this joint action as a strategic move to confront the expanding threat of transnational terrorism. The operation signals a direct effort to prevent foreign ISIS-affiliated fighters from creating or strengthening safe havens within Nigeria’s borders, particularly in regions beyond the group’s traditional stronghold in the North East.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens,” the DHQ stated, affirming support for all joint and inter-agency initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace and security across the nation.
