In a decisive intervention during the early hours of Christmas Day, troops of the 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace successfully thwarted a planned attack on a community in Plateau State, neutralising a notorious bandit in the process.
Acting on credible intelligence, the soldiers conducted a targeted operation in the Gwande Community of Monguna District, Bokkos Local Government Area. Upon arrival, they encountered a group of armed bandits who were in the final stages of mobilising to launch an assault on a nearby settlement.
The troops swiftly engaged the criminals in a fierce gun battle, forcing the assailants to flee in disarray. During the exchange, one bandit was neutralised, while several others are believed to have escaped with gunshot wounds.
Items recovered from the scene include one fabricated revolver rifle, one fabricated pistol, nine rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, and six cartridges.
Preliminary reports from local sources have identified the neutralised individual as a well-known member of a criminal syndicate responsible for terrorising Gwande and surrounding areas. Follow-up operations are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The operation forms a critical part of the ongoing “Operation Peace Shield,” aimed at ensuring a secure environment for residents during the festive period.
Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged the public to continue providing timely information to security agencies and issued a stern warning to criminal elements to desist from illegal activities or face “decisive military action.”
“Troops remain resolute, vigilant, and prepared to deal ruthlessly with any threat to peace and security in Plateau State,” he stated.
