Former Adamawa State Senator Elisha Abbo has opened up for the first time about an alleged assassination attempt on his life by soldiers in Michika, Adamawa State, on 29th May 2022.
The former lawmaker, who represented Adamawa North Senatorial District in the 9th Senate, made the revelations in a lengthy Facebook post on Wednesday, addressed directly to the people of Michika .
Abbo claimed the soldiers targeted him after he challenged illegal levies they were imposing on residents, including N5,000 monthly charges on motorcycle owners, as well as fees on cement, roofing sheets, and fertilizer.
“I Became Their Target”
Abbo said he took the matter to the floor of the Senate and fought until those illegal practices were reversed, but the victory came at a heavy cost.
“From that moment, I became their target,” he stated.
The former senator detailed a dramatic escape, saying Hon. Luka Danbaba helped him flee on foot, while Thomas Ayuba Frangu picked him up from the bush where he had been hidden and drove him safely out of Michika.
He reportedly left his convoy of vehicles behind, reaching Muchalla at 4am.
“My aides spent the night on a mountain while soldiers searched for them as though they were Boko Haram members,” Abbo recounted.
He added that at daybreak, when residents began coming out of their homes, the soldiers withdrew for fear of being seen. His aides, together with the two police officers who accompanied him, descended from the mountain and drove through the town while the same soldiers watched them.
“I have never spoken publicly about this until today,” Abbo said.
The former senator, who was sacked by the Court of Appeal in October 2023 and replaced by PDP’s Amos Yohanna, has remained a polarising figure in Adamawa politics.
He has since emerged as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for Adamawa State ahead of the 2027 elections, a move political observers view as a significant development in the state’s political landscape .
Abbo’s political career has been marked by several controversies. In 2019, he made national headlines after a viral video showed him assaulting a woman at a sex toy shop in Abuja, an incident for which he later publicly apologised .
More recently, in October 2025, he denied reports linking him to the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl, describing the claims as an “orchestrated smear campaign” by political enemies . The Nigeria Police Force later cleared him of all charges related to that allegation .
Senator Abbo represented Adamawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2019 until his removal by the Court of Appeal in October 2023 .
