A solemn delegation of loyalists from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the political platform that propelled Muhammadu Buhari to national prominence before the 2015 merger, gathered in Daura on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, to pay their final respects to the former Nigerian leader.
The group, led by Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Nasarawa State and a key figure in the Buhari political family, was received by the Governor of Kastina State before they joined dignitaries, family members, and a grieving nation in bidding farewell to the two term president, who passed away in London after a prolonged illness.
The delegation, which included Rt. Hon. Amina Masari, Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, Hon. Farouk Aliyu Adamu, Hon. Dr. Almajir Geidam, Hon. Ayuba Yerima Balami, Osita Okechukwu, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, and Dr. Nasiru Ladan, represented the core Buharists, those who had stood with him through his three failed presidential bids (2003, 2007, 2011) before his eventual victory in 2015.
The same group had met with Buhari earlier in the year (February 2025) when the former president publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and threw his weight behind his successor, President Bola Tinubu.
The presence of the CPC bloc at Buhari’s burial was a clear expression to the enduring bond between the late president and his earliest backers. Many of them had sacrificed personal ambitions to support his vision, and even after the CPC’s dissolution, they remained a united political family.
Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s fifth democratically elected president (2015–2023), died Sunday 13th July, 2025 at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of anti corruption, economic reforms, and a fiercely loyal political base.
The funeral was marked by a strong presence of his old political allies, particularly those from the CPC, the party he founded in 2011 after leaving the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). The CPC later merged with other opposition parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, a move that ought Buhari to power in 2015.
