In a significant demonstration of political strength, Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance has secured resounding victories in the home local government areas of his main rivals, further solidifying his path to re-election in Anambra State.
The Labour Party candidate, George Moghalu, and the African Democratic Congress candidate, John Chuma-Nwosu, both from Nnewi North Local Government Area, have lost their home turf to the incumbent governor. The results, announced on Sunday at the State Collation Centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission, revealed a commanding performance by Mr Soludo in this key constituency.
The Collation Officer for Nnewi North announced that the APGA candidate, Mr Soludo, polled 20,320 votes, soundly defeating his closest challenger in the area, the All Progressives Congress candidate Nicholas Ukachukwu, who scored 5,441 votes. Mr Moghalu of the Labour Party, despite his local origins, managed only 1,140 votes in his home local government area. The ADC candidate, Mr Chuma-Nwosu, trailed significantly with just 553 votes.
The electoral outcome in Nnewi North represents a particularly striking setback for both Mr Moghalu and Mr Chuma-Nwosu, who hail from Uruagu and Oduda Nnewichi communities respectively within the local government area. The results indicate that Mr Soludo’s appeal and APGA’s political machinery successfully penetrated what might naturally have been considered opposition strongholds.
The collation officer provided further context to the results, noting that of the 166,291 registered voters in Nnewi North, only 29,323 were accredited to participate in the poll. From the 29,284 total votes cast, 28,715 were deemed valid while 569 were rejected as invalid.
In a further display of Mr Soludo’s widening lead, the APC candidate Nicholas Ukachukwu also suffered defeat in his own local government area of origin. Official results from Nnewi South Local Government Area showed Mr Soludo polling 17,286 votes compared to Mr Ukachukwu’s 9,281 votes, securing another important victory for the incumbent governor in what should have been a reliable base for his APC challenger.
The collation officer for Nnewi South reported that 27,937 voters were accredited from the 102,907 registered voters in the council area, indicating a similar pattern of voter turnout across the regions where results have been announced.
These consecutive victories in the home territories of his main opponents underscore Governor Soludo’s formidable position as vote counting continues across Anambra State. The outcomes from Nnewi North and Nnewi South suggest a potential sweeping victory for the APGA candidate, who hails from Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area, as he seeks a second term in office.
