Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has made his first major appointment since his reinstatement, swearing in Benibo Anabraba as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The move signals a step towards normalizing governance after months of political turmoil in the state.
The appointment marks a significant moment for Fubara, who recently resumed duties following the lifting of a six-month emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu. While congratulating Anabraba, Governor Fubara described the appointment as an act of divine favour and issued a firm charge against the abuse of power.
“My charge is very simple — God has brought you in at this particular time to be the Secretary to the Government of Rivers State,” Fubara stated. “It’s a position of honour. I want you to guard that office with honour, discharge your duty with respect, and protect the interests of Rivers State.”
Emphasizing the weight of the role, the governor advised, “When you leave office, I want you to leave with honour, and you can only do so when you discharge your duty responsibly.” He expressed confidence in Anabraba’s ability, citing his past record as a former Minority Leader in the State Assembly and Commissioner for Housing.
Fubara also framed the appointment as a crucial part of rebuilding trust. “We’re coming from a very, very bad position. We really need to reassure the people of Rivers State that we mean well for them — especially now that peace has returned to the state,” he said, urging the new SSG to help him succeed in the “assignment that God Almighty has given to us.”
Anabraba’s appointment is seen as Governor Fubara’s initial move to consolidate his administration after the political crisis that led to his suspension and the installation of a Sole Administrator for the state.
