Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo commissioned two major infrastructure projects in Sokoto State on Wednesday as part of celebrations marking Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s second anniversary in office.
The commissioned projects – the Tamaje Water Scheme and Mabera Township Roads – represent critical investments in Sokoto’s water infrastructure and urban transportation network. Governor Okpebholo described his role in the commissioning ceremony as both an honor and a testament to growing national unity.
Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, confirmed the Edo State delegation’s successful participation in the anniversary events, noting that such collaborations align with his principal’s vision of a more united Nigeria.
“This is not just a privilege; it is a reflection of the growing partnerships I am building across the country,” Governor Okpebholo stated during the event. “It is also a sign that A New Edo Has Risen. I congratulate my brother Governor and the great people of Sokoto State for their strides in development. Together, we will continue to advance progress, unity, and shared prosperity across Nigeria.”
Political observers noted the symbolic importance of a Southern governor commissioning projects in Nigeria’s historic Northern caliphate region. Such visible inter-regional collaborations remain relatively uncommon in Nigeria’s political landscape, which has often been marked by regional tensions.
The Tamaje Water Scheme is expected to provide clean water access to over 50,000 residents in Sokoto’s metropolitan area, while the newly completed Mabera Township Roads aim to ease chronic traffic congestion in one of the state’s busiest commercial districts.
Governor Aliyu’s administration has made infrastructure development a cornerstone of its governance agenda since taking office in 2023. The invitation extended to Governor Okpebholo underscores the growing trend of state governors seeking cross-regional partnerships to showcase national unity.
