The Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Maitama, has remanded Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, the member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the continuation of his trial.
The remand order was issued on June 24, 2026, by Hon. Justice Y. Halilu, who directed prison authorities to keep the lawmaker in custody following criminal proceedings instituted against him by the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Justice Halilu granted bail but set stringent conditions that the defendant was reportedly unable to meet on Wednesday.
The conditions include two sureties who must possess landed property in either Maitama or Asokoro, each valued at N1 billion; the sureties must deposit the title documents of the properties with the court; the sureties must write a letter of undertaking to produce the defendant at every hearing; and the defendant must deposit his international travel document with the court.
The criminal charge against Hon. Amobi Ogah is Charge No. CR/650/2024, filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation at the FCT High Court on July 31, 2024. The charge contains five counts.
In Count One, Ogah is accused of deposing to a false declaration in an affidavit at the registry of the FCT High Court, Abuja on May 18, 2023, wherein he made an imputation that Hon. Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, assured her supporters that she had “BOUGHT over the Tribunal judges (particularly, Hon. Justice Halima Saleeman),” a statement he knew to be false.
This offence is contrary to Section 164 of the Penal Code Laws Cap 89 LFN 1963 and punishable under Section 158(2) of the same Act.
In Count Two, Ogah is accused of making a false and damaging declaration in the same affidavit, wherein he imputed that Onyejeocha had successfully removed the former Chairman of the Panel, Hon. Justice Halilu, to pave the way for her to bring in Hon. Justice Halima Saleeman, whom she is familiar with, to secure judgment in her favour.
This offence is contrary to Section 391 of the Penal Code Laws Cap 89 LFN 1963 and punishable under Section 392 of the same Act.
In Count Three, Ogah is accused of making a false declaration concerning Onyejeocha to his constituent members, knowing it to be false. This offence is contrary to Section 391 of the Penal Code Laws Cap 89 LFN 1963 and punishable under Section 394 of the same Act.
In Count Four, Ogah is accused of preparing and deposing to a false and defamatory declaration against Onyejeocha in the affidavit of May 18, 2023, knowing it to be false. This offence is contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code Laws Cap 89 LFN 1963 and punishable under the same Section of the Act.
In Count Five, Ogah is accused of making a false declaration against Onyejeocha with intent to destroy her, as a result of which she suffered harm to her reputation. This offence is contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code Laws Cap 89 LFN 1963 and punishable under the same Section of the Act.
These charges stem from a petition filed by Onyejeocha on December 1, 2023, which accused Ogah of making false statements in a petition he wrote to the Court of Appeal during the election tribunal.
She had already filed a separate civil suit, FCT/HC/CV/510/2023, against Ogah, demanding ₦10 billion in damages for defamation, which is still pending.
A court document titled “Warrant of Commitment to Prison on Remand”, obtained by this newspaper, was issued to the Kuje Correctional Centre authorities, directing them to keep the defendant in custody pending further orders of the court.
As of the time of this report, neither Hon. Ogah nor his legal team has publicly commented on the development. No official statement has been issued by his family, political associates, the Labour Party, or the lawmaker’s media office.
However, a new video has surfaced showing Hon. Ogah declaring that he has been released from Kuje Correctional Centre. This development has not yet been independently verified as his supporters claim the video is fabricated.
