The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), celebrated the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Potiskum, Yobe.
The global event, annually observed on June 26 and declared by the United Nations, is aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of drug abuse and promoting collective action towards a drug-free society.
The 2026 edition of the global observance with the theme – “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses,” brought together agencies including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, to brainstorm on the ills of the menace.
The NDLEA Commander in Yobe State, Mustapha Tajuddin, said the campaign focused on combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking through prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, law enforcement and partnership.
He emphasised that the fight against drug abuse requires collective responsibility, adding that “together, let’s build a healthy, safe and drug-free world.”
He further reinforced the campaign message — “Say no to drugs, say yes to life.”
The awareness rally commenced at the emir’s palace in Fika, where the spokesperson for the Emir, Adamu Baba, the Ganamun Fika, conveyed the traditional ruler’s support and goodwill.
He said “all the supporting agents are behind you, and like I said, the royal father assures you that whenever his attention is needed, the door is open because this is a very big fight that needs a very big effort.”
The Vice Chairman of Potiskum Local Government Area, Adamu Ngojin, commended the initiative and called for community-wide participation, noting that “we must all join hands to tackle this community illness that serves as the mother of all social vices.”
The Emir of Potiskum, Umaru Bubaram Ibn Wuriwa Bauya, highlighted the impact of drug abuse on society.
He said, “Drug abuse is the genesis of all problems. We want our society to be aware of the dangers of indulging in drug abuse.”
The event featured a road walk, sensitisation and community engagement aimed at educating youths and residents on the dangers of drug abuse.
