Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that the recent wave of defections by PDP governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will not save the party from defeat in the 2027 general elections.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain made this declaration during the unveiling of the ADC National Contact and Mobilization Office in Jos on Wednesday, where he unveiled his vision for a new political direction for Nigeria.
“Everyone is tired of this APC and PDP government across the country,” El-Rufai stated. “Governors from PDP are defecting to APC but Nigerians are defecting to ADC. By God’s grace, 230m Nigerians will defeat 25 governors.”
The former governor emphasized that while political elites continue their migration between parties, ordinary Nigerians have already made their decision. “Nigerians have decided that in 2027, they will vote for ADC. What is ahead of us is to unite and bring all party members together,” he affirmed.
El-Rufai positioned the ADC as the party of the future, highlighting its inclusive policies. “ADC is the only party that reserved 40% of leadership positions to the youth and 35% leadership contesting for women. It is a party for young people and women,” he explained.
Reflecting on Plateau State’s potential, the former governor recalled: “40 years ago, I was visiting Plateau every week because my fiancé did her National Youth Service here in Jos. But since then, things have gone in the wrong direction in Jos, Plateau.”
He expressed optimism about restoring the state’s former glory, saying: “I hope with better leadership at the state and National level, we will be able to unite people of Plateau state across ethnic and religious lines; so that Plateau state can be that Home of Peace and tourism that we have known it to be.”
While acknowledging that “things were not going well” in the country, El-Rufai maintained that “there is still hope” through the emergence of the ADC as a viable third force capable of uniting the nation and providing quality leadership.
The event also featured Hon. Jamilu Lawandi Datti, Plateau State coordinator of the ADC Contact and Mobilisation, who highlighted widespread youth unemployment and insecurity as key issues driving Nigerians toward alternative political platforms.
