A lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has been confirmed dead after he reportedly collapsed in a hotel room in Edo State during an encounter with a commercial sex worker.
It was gathered that the deceased, a senior academic at the Edo State-owned institution, had checked into the hotel located in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Sunday with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Sources said the lecturer reportedly sent the young woman out to buy water shortly after they settled into the room. On her return, however, she reportedly met him lying motionless and raised the alarm.
The incident was said to have been reported to the police at about 8 pm the same day.
Speaking on the development on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and disclosed that three persons had been taken into custody in connection with the lecturer’s death.
According to her, those arrested include the owner of the hotel, its manager and the 21-year-old woman.
She explained that investigations were still ongoing to determine the actual cause of death, adding that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff of the institution but was quick to note that the incident took place outside the campus.
He stated that the university would not deny that the deceased was its staff member but stressed that what happened was a matter of his private life. He also said the woman involved was not a student of the institution.
The university spokesman declined further comments, saying the matter was already being handled by the police.
